Skin and Pigmentation

Melanotan I

Research Use Only | Not for Human Consumption

Melanotan I is primarily studied for melanin production, skin-pigment signaling, and how experimental models respond to controlled light exposure. Researchers are interested in how melanocortin signaling influences darker pigment formation and other responses within pigment-producing skin cells.

What Is Melanotan I?

Melanotan I is a synthetic peptide modeled after alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, a naturally occurring signaling molecule involved in skin pigmentation.

Its main research target is the melanocortin-1 receptor, commonly called MC1R. Activation of this pathway signals pigment-producing cells to increase eumelanin, the darker form of melanin studied for its ability to absorb light and influence visible pigmentation.

Published research has examined pigmentation measurements, controlled light-response pathways, melanocortin signaling, and specialized photobiology applications. This page describes those research areas only and does not provide personal-use or sun-exposure guidance.
